The Brief
Ghost Security operates at the cutting edge of application security, helping companies identify and remediate vulnerabilities before they become breaches. In a market flooded with cybersecurity companies using the same visual playbook — shields, locks, matrix-style code rain — Ghost needed a website that projected technical authority while standing out from the crowd.
The site needed to serve multiple audiences: CISOs evaluating security vendors, developers integrating security tools, and executives approving budgets. The content system had to support regular security research publications, establishing Ghost as a thought leader in the space.
Discovery & Strategy
Security Industry Positioning
We audited 30 cybersecurity company websites and categorized them into visual archetypes: the "enterprise fortress" (blue, corporate, stock photos), the "hacker aesthetic" (green-on-black, matrix vibes), and the "modern security" (clean, product-focused, minimal). Ghost aligned with the third but wanted more edge — they wanted to feel like a cybersecurity company, not a generic SaaS product.
The content architecture separated platform capabilities (for technical evaluation), business outcomes (for executive buy-in), and security research (for industry credibility). Each content type has its own page template optimized for its specific audience and goal.
Design Approach
Dark Authority
The dark theme isn't just aesthetic — it's strategic. Dark interfaces signal technical sophistication to the security community. We built a complete dark color system with carefully calibrated contrast ratios that meet WCAG AA standards while maintaining the dramatic feel. Accent colors — electric blue and warning red — are used sparingly for maximum impact on CTAs and alerts.
Custom iconography replaces generic security clip art. Each icon was designed to represent specific security concepts (SAST, DAST, SCA, API security) with technical precision while remaining visually distinctive at small sizes.
Development & Build
Security Research Blog
The blog CMS supports technical security content: code blocks with syntax highlighting, CVE reference formatting, severity ratings, and embedded proof-of-concept demonstrations. Articles are tagged by vulnerability type, affected technology, and severity level, enabling filtered browsing for security professionals researching specific threats.
SEO was critical for the research blog — each article is structured with schema markup for technical articles, clear heading hierarchy for featured snippets, and internal linking to related vulnerability research. This turns every published finding into a long-term organic traffic asset.
Results & Impact
Market Position
The redesigned site helped Ghost Security establish a distinctive visual identity in a crowded market. The security research blog became their highest-traffic channel, with individual vulnerability disclosures generating significant organic traffic and media coverage. The dark, technical aesthetic resonated strongly with their developer audience, improving engagement metrics across the site.
